Father Csaba’s reflection on the gospel Saturday 15 September 2018  Feast of our Lady of Sorrows.

I admire Mary, She said yes to the angel, yes to God’s request , She accepts motherhood , the little Jesus , and to take part in the redemption of the world . She does not not know what awaits Her, old Simeon warned Her that seven daggers will pierce Her heart and yet She still gives two young doves to God , She takes on the work , the suffering to partake in the redemption in the world .

The rich young man keeps God’s commandments , does no harm for anybody , but he does not dare to say “yes” to Jesus Christ, does not dare to get going and step on the way of love . How many rich young men live even today , well groomed they keep societies many written and unwritten rules , they live their shielded lives but do not dare to step on the narrow and often steep path , often tiring and painful way of love . Of course I  know that it is not easy to live for others ! To shoulder other worries , troubles , others bad habits , whinging to put up with their grumbling , even though this the path of the grain of wheat , that through dying for us  leads to the birth of the ear bringing a plentiful harvest , swaying in the sunshine! Only the wounds, grazes , humiliations can make us similar to Christ on the cross giving His life for us .We cannot follow Christ with His crown of thorns with comfortable , our own small, sunken into our everyday worries   shuffling . 

Lets dare to decide by life , to take a firm hold of the hand of  our loved one , lets dare to decide by having a family , to accept children , to start an enterprise , with honest enduring work to provide the everyday needs . Stand up my brother , say yes to God , do not be a selfish , barren , lazy rich young man hiding in your comfort zone!

I read it with a sad heart in yesterday’s paper :

“That the European Parliament in the early afternoon with a close to 70 % majority  endorsed the reports about the Hungarian situation , and following this they moved to the next  level against Hungary  prosecuting the country .”  Index

What is to be done ? ‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”….Luke 6, 27  Jesus in today’s gospel shows everyone a clear direction ! Every time if we get into conflict with anybody we have to continue on the way of love ! Get going without hatred , calmly stating your views , one has to have an ongoing dialogue , we have to try to convince them  about our truth the ones who think differently !! Jesus does not only tells this to us , asks us but He Himself after Good Friday , goes to face the disciples from Emmaus with pierced feet and heart and calmly , with love accompanies them ! Jesus talks to them so wisely, nicely , reasons , teaches that by the end of the journey these people who were sunk into themselves, their faith shaken not only say" our hearts burning within us while he talked with us “and they have the strength to go back during the night to their companions , so they themselves can actually rouse their companions disheartened by the "scandal "of Golgotha !!

There is only one road ahead of us , the way of a dialogue, this road leads us into life, into the tomorrow , we have to walk on this path as well as individuals, but as a nation as well!!

Father Csaba’s reflection on the gospel…..  Sunday  9 September 2018 - 23rd Sunday in Ordinary time

"Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened.” Jesus wanted the sick man to be healed, and he was healed !! Jesus’ will !! Willpower !! How much willpower is in me ? Physical, spiritual, mental willpower are not attributes that are born with us ,but are the result of honest, enduring work , a holy power without which we are only drifting tree leaves ! 

The beautiful geraniums in the picture are thriving in the grounds  of the parish in Kézdivásárhely , all praising the caring love , the everyday will of the parish priest ! I cannot heal the sick , but can I keep a pot plant alive ? Did at least one pot plant , a tree  planted by me, a person burst into flower during the course of summer  as a result of my will ?! 

Summer is gone , let me look back , how many flowers bloomed  out of my will ,  how many people ’s face was lit up by happiness, the light of joyful hope just because I bent down to them , and I wanted that they live and be happy !? Lets wish that the wounds of the earth maybe healed  and the world around us becomes more beautiful !

Then Jesus returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

Is the bridegroom with us ? Repenting I think ashamed about the “bridegroom”  who is standing in front of the door and knocking :"20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Book of Revelation 3, 20

Yes , the dearest visitor is knocking and we are just running about, being officious , committing sins unfortunately , and in the meantime we are forgetting that by sitting at whose feet , our lives could become days of celebrations !! Let us quieten down , because it is only this meeting, this joyful togetherness that can light up our lives with the joy , light of the wedding feast !!

The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." He also told them a parable: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise the new will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, 'The old is good.'"

‘Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!’ Luke 5, 8

The saint is the one who accuses himself , because seeing our own faults humbly we acknowledge  our faults in front of Jesus Christ and then our Redeemer embraces us  and the flame of the divine love cleanses, sanctifies , lifts us into the community of love of the Holy Trinity , because God is the healing love ! But if I exalt myself , and in conjunction with this I speak ill , belittle others then God will leave me alone with my imagined greatness and I’ll dry up, and as the salt that lost its flavour I’ll be discarded ! Yes the one who who accuses others , who is looking for , raking up dirt on others , looking eagerly for proof and they even get paid for this , that person will never become a saint ! What else would the evil spirit’s purpose be other than trying to prove that the creator God is a bungler , and everything He created is faulty, bad , and whatever good is in Him is just hypocrisy !

Decide in whose team would you like to play in, live in ? On the side of the building , consoling , encouraging , starting anew God, or do you want to be an advocate of a know-all “judge” condemning everything and everyone , looking only for faults in their fellow human beings ?! In whose team are you in , expect your payment from that person as well ! Me seeing the problems , faults in myself and around me, still proclaim the final triumph  of love  with trust !

Photo: our dear daughter Ibolya who got married and I believe that she’ll become a wonderful mother accepting nice, sweet children , even if she grew up in a child- protection home, I am praying for this and I’ll help her whatever way I can !!

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,a the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.v 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.w

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”x

5 Simon answered, “Master,y we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.z But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.a 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”b 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;c from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.d

It is good to do good !! I am certain that God cannot be surpassed in goodness , love, generosity !! If somewhere , anywhere , you are good , your goodness will not only make the world better, but you yourself as well !! That certain glass of water most certainly will not be written up with your name on it , but God will repay His debt a hundredfold often within moments !! This is what today’s gospel is about as well but also a letter from a dear friend she just shared with me ,that I want to share with you so I just “gossip” on. 

Take it as an encouragement to do good….with love,

I tell you what happened today: I went out to a shopping centre to buy the school equipment for my children. I only go there rarely . I pushed my shopping trolley out of the shop in front of a perfumery shop and I was hit by the pleasant scents emanating from there. I thought , on this grey rainy morning it would be nice to “smell” nice. It crossed my mine  it would be good just to step in quickly and I would ask them to spray some perfume on me it would really feel good just now. However I hurried on towards the exit . It was strange but just the thought of the scent cheered me up .

Just outside the exit a nice looking young man was standing in front of a stand I did not even look , what caught my eye was a wooden box there was a writing on it that they were collecting money for people with large families, towards their school related expenses . I stopped and the young man came up to me and told me he was minding this stand for a while also. …. I had no money left , but I asked him what could I help with .. it was a silly questions ..but since the goods they were collecting for were in my shopping trolley I took out what I could and placed it into the box ..upon this the young man said since I was so nice to have a look around his stand as well ..he was selling excellent French perfumes and told me to try them out . This is the sweet and this is the bitter ! I had a good laugh as I sprayed myself with both the sweet and bitter scents ..it worked well ..although I prefer the sweet ones . I told him about my wish of half a minute ago who then understood why I laughed ..the we embraced each other and I told him if we would pay so much attention to God as He pays to me the world would have a much nicer scent within and around me . The he told me he was able to give me as a present a bottle of he  

perfume free of charge , and to accept it.  I told him all I dreamt about was a quick spray , I thought of the sweet scent but I also received the bitter one as well , two instead of one so if who would sell the perfume to somebody to put the money into the collection box. This guy had a interesting expression on his face, his features became nice and gentle... for a while he was holding onto the perfume in his hand , he was loafing around for a while then kindly he wished me a nice day. <3

After leaving the synagogue he entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her. Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them. As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them. Demons also came out of many, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah. At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.’ So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea.

The dog sits!

Not long ago I was visiting a family , the favourite member of the household , a lapdog was jumping, running around! Every inhabitant of the house talked proudly, joyfully how “sweet” Samuka is ! I tried to bring up a rather important topic  that was the reason for my travelling there , but no matter what we talked about the conversation continuously returned to the little dog, that was either barking or jumping around , but we had to pay attention, be preoccupied with him all the time ! After a while the pedagogue got the better of me, and not loudly but in a firm voice I rebuked mother’s little darling : the dog sits ! Everything went quiet in the house , silently , reproachfully they looked at me and picked up the favourite of the household, “molested” by me,  placing it on their lap caressing it! I was trying to explain that hunting dogs, sheepdogs , but even the police dogs are trained , taught by very precise command, but I could see that here this was the end of everything , because all their respect for me evaporated like camphor and disappeared for ever from this family ! 

Jesus asks us to be prophets , to proclaim the Word , that will make our brethren, our families, our society better !I should proclaim that without hurdles, limitations boundaries, rules there is no life ! That man who cannot control himself , his children, his family pets gently, calmly , but giving an order , that person is scatterbrain and is going to loose not only himself, but his loved ones as well ! One should be prophetic , teach but for the sake of peace they all keep quiet,  rather turn a blind eye to the inappropriate happenings !

For the last twenty five years in all our homes we eat together . We stand by the table till everybody quietens down in the dining room - even if 150-200 children eat at the same time - then we pray , we wish one another good appetite and sit down to consume our everyday food ! During the meal many -many children make a rumbling, buzzing noise but it is rare that we have to tell anybody off ! The motto is : that I try to speak so loudly that my companions sitting at the next table can still hear their own voices ! We taught our children a few simple rules, and so I can take a visitor for lunch without having to be ashamed , and we can calmly talk about any topic in the midst of the laughing bustle of the world of the children ! Discipline, order is good for the children in the homes from studying to playing everything goes much easier , better if they can exercise self-control ! The grades  are  better , there is less tension if our energy is not wasted on explanations, “healing “ wounds , but can spend happy , joyful moments on good programs, excursions ! Lets set up the rules of living together, we can make our own decisions , to have  a settled , organised way of life and will be happy !

When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives

and recovery of sight to the blind,

to let the oppressed go free,

to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.'

And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, 'Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.' All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, 'Is not this Joseph's son?' He said to them, 'Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, "Doctor, cure yourself!" And you will say, "Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum." ' And he said, 'Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's home town. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.' When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

..I would not like to live in a house that was taken away from others , nationalised ….

How can we best invest the talents given to us?! I know several people who perhaps in good faith moved into the properties of others that were nationalised during  communism . Over the years unquestionably they beautified, kept in order , even built onto the  original house , then came the changes and the original owner appeared , that either by nice words or by taking action in court wanted to reclaim their lawful property !! Unfortunately many human tragedies date back to this, that the house that was not built on Christ , clean honest foundations , but on all sorts of shaky ground , unclear swampy chaos! I am reading an attached writing :" In the  present area of Namibia there were uprisings between 1904-1908 against the colonising Germans. The armies of the German empire suppressed the unrest , and out of close to one-hundredthousand members of the Heroro tribe hardly ten thousand people were left alive , the Nama tribe and many other smaller tribes were practically wiped out. “ Infinitely sad lines ! One person, one nation is capitalising its wealth , through the suffering , blood of others !!

Walking across Székelyföld often it hurts me that it is lagging behind compared to other Western countries it is simpler , poorer and yet I am filled with unbelievable joy , peace here at home, in my precious homeland !! Here there is no foreign property !! Here every single haystack, barn , house, church , every but everything was born out of the industrious, sweaty labour of our people !!! Our people did not colonise or are colonising in the big , wide world we did not build, from obtaining by force , or improper trading, by trafficking arms , drugs , our schools, hospitals , public buildings but from the joining of forces of communities, parishes , villages by honest work! 

So visibly the talents entrusted into our care did not grow so spectacularly as with other nations , but what we have is ours ! Despite our weaknesses , insignificance humbly we can stand in the sight of God , because here in Székelyföld , the Carpathian basin there are no plundered treasures that would be stained by the blood of other nations !! For our sins we payed a high price !! For me these are very important facts ! This is one of the many reasons why I never moved to the West I would not like to live in a house that was taken away from others, nationalised afraid when when will they hand me a request for an account rendered !!

Here you have what is yours.” But his master replied, “You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour."

Matthew 25:1,13

How many hours did the foolish bridesmaids spent in getting ready, keeping vigil, working and yet in the end they still lost everything !? The wise bridesmaids perhaps took slightly more oil, were persistent and they reached their goal !! Lets persist in doing good, lets not get off the way of love!! 

I send you more oil with prayerful love , for persistence , faithfulness, starting anew, the blazing flame !

Jesus said to his disciples, "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, 'Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise replied, 'No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' But he replied, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.' Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour."

Father Csaba’s reflection on the gospel Friday 24 August 2018 Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle

I take you in ! How nice it is that Jesus not only loves the ones who trust in Him , who speak highly of Him behind His back as well , 

say good things about Him , but also the Nathaniels who speak about Him disparagingly also ! If we want a better world then we also have to embark on the way of Jesus ! The world will become better if we make it better , if we try to find the good in each other!

Is this possible ? Are we are not throwing pearls to the swines , when we lavish love on bad, useless children , people ?  Thanks be to God I often experienced that it is good to be good, and I can share the flame of my burning light also with those whose light went out and they were wandering in the dark ! I also experienced that the light that I give to my brother also lights up  my world, making it more beautiful and together with the world also makes me richer !

Close on 15 years ago one of my fellow priest on a summer day visited me with a young boy aged around 10 years ! His directions given were quite simple :” Look after him, but don’t let him come home as they will “beat him to death” ! What makes a precious creation of God become bad in the eyes of the people ?  The children get homework at school, but if there is no-one who makes the child to sit down at home , then it is certainly much more exciting to be outside in the garden, playing soccer, playing than studying ! The following day in the school then comes the question : “Where is your homework ? Why did you not study ?” And comes the bad grade ! Where I have to face defeat , if possible I also try to move away as quickly as possible ! Children tend to avoid tension, this is what the school calls being a truant ! “ Is it not enough that you don’t study , but you also play truant you little rascal ?!” So the following day they call the father , they give him a piece of their mind , and the father resorts for the use of an ancient pedagogic tool, gets his belt and tries to convince his little rascal to see things in a different way “! The child does not want to “owe anything” , and he repays the “attention” by breaking a window in secret and with this and that starts on a downward spiral ! Where does he stop ? Either in our arms or under our feet ! Thank God this child finished in my arms ! Luckily it was possible to catch him in time , and he understood that it was much better to be a good “hot shot” , to live by honest work , to support a wife , children, a family ! The years have passed and this rascal became my friend , my colleague , a grown up man with a nice wife , two clever children raising his family, and giving to God what is His, and to the state what is due ! He is God fearing, taxpaying citizen and I am proud of him and his family, also his everyday work! 

We have to believe that God does not create rejects ! We have to believe that love is not a reward , but a medicine ! We have to believe that my own small flickering love, goodness , calm, wise word also can become a healing balm, medicine ! Of course we also have to be aware that even the nicest soup can become repulsive  by the dead flies floating in it! Lets pay attention that our love is  not marred by hurtful comments, judgements, disparaging comments ! The “said" judgement is a curse, the “said" good words a blessing and both have a creative power ! Condemnation , judgement offend people , make them worse , the good word, attentiveness make people better , and these are such basic truths like the laws of physics ! No matter how incredible it seems , that every man desires to be valuable, a blessing for their loved ones , their surrounding and we have no other tasks as lesser brothers , humbly to help them in everything , so that the values hidden in them by God become public property !

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.’ Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’ When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’
